Jones, a skilled engraver active in London during the late eighteenth century, specialised in translating the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the tonal medium of mezzotint. The technique relies on the roughening of a copper plate to create a range of light and shadow, allowing for the soft transitions visible in the subject's face and the voluminous texture of her hair.

Lady Caroline Price is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing the fashionable attire of the period. Her costume includes a high-collared bodice with a prominent, ruffled jabot, which provides a stark contrast to the darker tones of her jacket. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the Reynolds style, with a soft glow illuminating the sitter against a shadowed, indistinct background. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the facial features and the elaborate styling of her hair, which was a hallmark of late Georgian portraiture.

John Jones was highly regarded for his ability to capture the nuances of Reynolds's brushwork. By using a dense network of burr on the plate, he achieved a velvety depth that mimics the richness of oil paint. This print offers a clear example of the reproductive print market in eighteenth-century Britain, where such works allowed the public to own copies of paintings held in private collections. The composition remains balanced and restrained, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the era. The print captures the sitter with a sense of composure, presenting a refined image that aligns with the social expectations of the British aristocracy during the late 1700s.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Lady-Caroline-Price_Poster_CompositorV1_1791804299188.jpg?v=1791804886
