kanei-picture-album-nishiyama-ken
Kan'ei Picture Album - Nishiyama Ken

A delicate woodblock print from the Kan'ei Picture Album, featuring a bird perched on a budding branch in the traditional kacho-ga style.

This print originates from the Kan'ei Picture Album (Kan'ei gafu), a collection of woodblock prints by the Japanese artist Nishiyama Ken. The work belongs to the kacho-ga tradition, a genre focused on the depiction of birds and flowers. This specific composition features a small bird perched upon a slender, arching branch, likely a willow, which is adorned with emerging buds. The artist employs a minimalist approach, allowing the negative space of the paper to define the atmosphere of the scene.

The aesthetic reflects the principles of the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking techniques by incorporating Western elements of light and shadow while maintaining the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition. The lines are delicate and controlled, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship in the carving and printing process. The muted colour palette, dominated by soft greys, browns, and subtle touches of red on the bird's feet and the branch buds, creates a sense of quiet observation.

Nishiyama Ken uses a balanced composition that draws the eye to the central subject without overwhelming the viewer with unnecessary detail. The inclusion of a red seal in the lower right corner provides a visual anchor, typical of traditional Japanese print formats. This piece is an example of the refined, observational style prevalent in early twentieth-century Japanese graphic arts. It captures a fleeting moment in nature, rendered with a focus on form and simplicity. The print is suitable for those who appreciate the understated elegance of Japanese design and the historical continuity of the kacho-ga genre.

You might also like

The Moon Beyond Shinagawa - Kobayashi Kiyochika — Kobayashi Kiyochika
Katada Ukimidō, from the series Eight Views of Lake Biwa - Itō Shinsui — Itō Shinsui

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Kan-ei-Picture-Album_Poster_CompositorV1_1791261024034.jpg?v=1791261495
