Executed by Augustin de Saint-Aubin in 1766, the work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The subject is depicted in profile, a common convention for portraiture that allows for a clear rendering of facial features and character. Saint-Aubin employs a combination of etching and engraving to achieve varied tonal qualities, from the soft modelling of the subject's face to the more rigid lines of the surrounding oval frame.

The composition is framed within an oval, which is further decorated with classical motifs. Below the portrait, a ribbon bears the inscription 'MULCET MOVET MONET', a play on the subject's name. This is accompanied by floral elements and musical notation, which provide context regarding Monnet's professional life in the theatre. The surrounding border features a laurel wreath, adding a sense of formality to the presentation. Saint-Aubin was a member of a prominent family of engravers, and his work is noted for its clarity and attention to detail. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the Rococo era, where decorative elements were integrated into the structure of the image to create a balanced and harmonious whole. The use of light and shadow, achieved through careful cross-hatching, gives the portrait a sense of volume and presence. This museum-grade print captures the fine lines of the original plate, preserving the nuances of Saint-Aubin's technique for contemporary display.

You might also like

Apotheosis of Hercules - Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo — Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo
Herders in a Landscape - Jacques-Philippe Le Bas — Jacques-Philippe Le Bas

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jean-Monnet_Poster_CompositorV1_1791883464997.jpg?v=1791883640
