The work features two figures, a boy and a woman, positioned on either side of a central wooden door. Each figure is framed by stalks of maize, a crop of immense cultural and historical weight in Mexican society. Rivera employs a flattened perspective, which draws from his interest in pre-Columbian art and the formal qualities of mural painting. The figures are rendered with simplified, solid forms, and the colour palette relies on earthy tones, terracotta reds, and the golden hues of the corn.

Rivera was a central figure in the Mexican Muralist movement, which sought to create a national identity through art that was accessible to the public. His work often depicted the daily lives of labourers and indigenous people, moving away from European academic traditions. In this piece, the symmetry of the composition creates a sense of balance and stability. The door acts as a physical and symbolic barrier, separating the two figures while simultaneously uniting them within the same architectural frame. The focus on the corn stalks serves to ground the figures in their environment, suggesting a connection between the people and the land they cultivate. The lack of complex shading or deep spatial recession allows the viewer to focus on the clarity of the forms and the symbolic nature of the subjects. This print captures the characteristic style of Rivera, where human figures are treated with a sense of monumental dignity, reflecting his broader aim to elevate the status of the common worker in the visual arts.

You might also like

Man Stooping with Stick or Spade by Vincent van Gogh
The Bus by Frida Kahlo
Diego Rivera prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Indian-Boy-and-Indian-Woman-with-Corn-Stalks_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117696815.jpg?v=1792140992
