The artist, active in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, belonged to the Soga school, which was known for its distinct approach to ink wash painting. The composition focuses on the bird, rendered with precise brushwork that captures the texture of its feathers and the tension in its posture. The hawk is tethered to the perch, a detail that speaks to the practice of falconry, which was a pursuit associated with the samurai class and the military elite of the era.

The use of ink on paper allows for a range of tones, from the deep, saturated blacks of the hawk's wings to the lighter, more atmospheric washes that define the background. Chokuan employs a controlled technique, balancing the realistic depiction of the bird with the stylistic conventions of the period. The vertical orientation of the hanging scroll format dictates the placement of the subject, creating a sense of stillness and focus. The tether, hanging downwards, provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal perch, guiding the viewer's eye through the composition. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the time, where the depiction of powerful animals served as a symbol of authority and martial prowess. The restraint in the background ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the hawk, allowing the subtle variations in ink density to convey volume and form. Through this work, Chokuan demonstrates the technical skill and thematic interests that defined his contribution to Japanese art history.

You might also like

A Hawk Capturing a Crane in Flight - Torii Kiyomasu I — Torii Kiyomasu
Bird Catching Fish Among Reeds - Watanabe Seitei — Watanabe Shōtei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Hunting-Hawk-on-Perch_Poster_CompositorV1_1791349417493.jpg?v=1791355568
