The composition is defined by the contrast between the verticality of the mature trees and the horizontal expanse of the water. De Koker employs a precise etching technique, using varied line weights to differentiate between the textures of the wooden structures, the dense foliage, and the reflective surface of the water.

The artist demonstrates a clear interest in the vernacular architecture of the Dutch countryside. The cottages, with their steep roofs and simple timber construction, are rendered with attention to shadow and form. Small details, such as the two birds swimming in the foreground and the subtle hatching used to suggest the movement of the water, provide a sense of calm and observation. The trees are drawn with a focus on their branching patterns, creating a canopy that frames the buildings and grounds the scene within its environment.

As a work of the eighteenth century, this print reflects the tradition of Dutch topographical and rural studies. The focus remains on the observation of everyday life and the quiet beauty of the provincial environment. The lack of dramatic narrative allows the viewer to focus on the technical execution of the lines and the balance of the composition. The print is a representative example of the period's interest in documenting the rural character of the Netherlands through the medium of etching, prioritising clarity and atmospheric detail over grandiosity.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Huizen-aan-een-vijver_Poster_CompositorV1_1791871784019.jpg?v=1791872101
