It functions as a visual guide to obstetric procedures, likely intended for use by surgeons or midwives of the period. The composition is divided into twelve distinct figures, each labelled with letters to indicate anatomical landmarks or specific stages of a procedure. Figures 1 through 7 depict the pelvic region during various stages of childbirth, showing the positioning of the foetus and the manual intervention required by the practitioner. The hands of the surgeon are rendered with clinical precision, demonstrating the techniques for assisting delivery.

Figures 9 through 12 shift the focus to the instrumentation of the era. These include various forms of forceps and hooks, tools that were essential to the development of modern obstetrics. The engraving style is characteristic of the mid-eighteenth century, utilising fine, controlled lines to convey the texture of bone, soft tissue, and metal instruments. The lack of shading in the background ensures that the viewer focuses entirely on the technical aspects of the anatomy and the tools. This work provides a clear view into the history of medicine, documenting the methods used to manage difficult births before the advent of modern surgical techniques. It is a piece of historical record, capturing the intersection of artistic skill and scientific inquiry during the Enlightenment. The systematic layout and the use of labels reflect the period's desire to categorise and standardise medical knowledge for educational purposes.

You might also like

Gedeelte van de Anatomische les van Dr. Deyman by J.
