greta-moll-henri-matisse
Greta Moll - Henri Matisse

A striking 1908 portrait by Henri Matisse, featuring bold brushwork and a decorative, flattened background.

Painted in 1908, this portrait depicts Greta Moll, a German artist and student of Matisse in Paris. The work captures the sitter in a seated pose, her hands resting upon a table surface. Matisse employs a bold, non-naturalistic colour palette, characteristic of his Fauvist period. The background features a decorative, floral-patterned textile that flattens the pictorial space, drawing attention to the surface of the canvas rather than creating an illusion of depth.

Matisse uses broad, visible brushstrokes to define the form of the sitter and the surrounding environment. The mint-green blouse is rendered with quick, gestural marks, while the dark, abstract shapes in the background provide a stark contrast to the lighter tones of the figure. The face is painted with a simplified structure, focusing on the essential features rather than anatomical precision. This approach reflects the artist's interest in expressive colour and simplified form, moving away from the traditional academic portraiture of the time.

Greta Moll was a significant figure in the early twentieth-century art scene, and this painting remains a clear example of Matisse's ability to balance decorative elements with human presence. The composition is structured around the central figure, yet the surrounding patterns compete for the viewer's attention, creating a tension between the subject and the decorative field. The work is currently held in the collection of the National Gallery in London, where it is recognised for its contribution to the development of modern portraiture.

You might also like

Modjesko, Soprano Singer by Kees van Dongen
The Blonde Woman by Albert Marquet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Greta-Moll_Poster_CompositorV1_1791981217237.jpg?v=1791982086
