foll-antoni-tapies
Foll - Antoni Tàpies

A bold 1970 lithograph by Antoni Tàpies, featuring expressive red intersecting strokes and black calligraphic marks on a stark white background.

Antoni Tàpies, a central figure in the Spanish post-war art scene, created this lithograph in 1970. The work displays his characteristic engagement with raw, gestural mark-making and a restricted, symbolic palette. The composition is dominated by two intersecting, broad strokes of red pigment, which evoke the form of a cross or a cancellation mark. These heavy, expressive lines are applied with a sense of urgency, suggesting the physical presence of the artist during the printing process.

Surrounding these central red forms are thinner, black calligraphic lines and scribbles. These marks appear almost like graffiti or automatic writing, adding a layer of tension to the surface. Tàpies often incorporated such elements to bridge the gap between high art and the visceral, everyday reality of the human condition. The stark contrast between the white background and the bold red and black ink creates a sense of immediate visual impact.

This piece reflects the artist's interest in the materiality of the medium. Tàpies frequently explored the tactile qualities of paint and ink, treating the surface of the paper as a site for existential inquiry. By stripping away representational imagery, he focused on the power of the gesture itself. The title, Foll, which translates to 'mad' or 'foolish' in Catalan, invites viewers to consider the irrational or emotional impulses behind the creation of the work. It is a direct, unadorned example of his graphic output, demonstrating his ability to convey complex psychological states through minimal means. The work remains a clear example of the Informel movement, where the process of creation is as significant as the finished image.

You might also like

Untitled (T1989-A3) by Hans Hartung
Untitled (from Poèmes d'Eugenio Montale) by Gerard Schneider

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Foll_Poster_CompositorV1_1792118774085.jpg?v=1792142992
