evening-bell-at-mii-temple-katsushika-hokusai-1
Evening Bell at Mii Temple - Katsushika Hokusai

An early Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting two women in a serene, traditional setting inspired by the Eight Views of Omi.

This woodblock print belongs to the early period of Katsushika Hokusai, a time when he was deeply engaged with the conventions of the Ukiyo-e school. The composition depicts two women in traditional kimono, positioned in the foreground against a simplified view of the Mii Temple area. The work is part of a series referencing the Eight Views of Omi, a traditional theme in Japanese art that links specific locations with poetic associations.

In this print, Hokusai employs the stylistic traits common to the late eighteenth century. The figures are rendered with elongated proportions and delicate facial features, characteristic of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones of peach, muted green, and black ink to define the forms. The background provides a sense of place through minimal architectural and natural elements, such as the pine tree and the distant shoreline, which serve to frame the subjects rather than provide a realistic spatial depth.

Unlike his later, more famous works that utilise bold perspective and saturated pigments, this piece demonstrates the artist's early mastery of line and balance. The interaction between the two figures suggests a quiet, contemplative moment, aligning with the theme of the evening bell. The print reflects the technical constraints and aesthetic preferences of the period, where the focus remained on the grace of the figures and the subtle arrangement of the scene. It offers a view into the formative years of an artist who would eventually reshape the visual language of Japanese printmaking through his later, more experimental series.

You might also like

Impression, Sunrise - Claude Monet — Claude Monet
Hokusai Manga, Vol. 12 - Katsushika Hokusai — Katsushika Hokusai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Evening-Bell-at-Mii-Temple_Poster_CompositorV1_1790721350765.jpg?v=1790725457
