The composition focuses on a single bird perched upon a flowering plum branch. The artist employs a refined technique, balancing the delicate application of colour with precise ink outlines. The plum blossoms, rendered in soft pinks, contrast against the muted, aged tone of the paper, creating a sense of quiet observation.

Zhang Ruoai was a member of the imperial court and a skilled practitioner of the bird and flower genre. His work reflects the traditional aesthetic values of the period, where nature serves as a subject for contemplation. The bird, with its teal head and long, pale tail feathers, is positioned centrally, drawing the eye across the horizontal span of the branch. The composition avoids clutter, allowing the negative space to define the form of the subject. The branch itself is depicted with controlled brushwork, suggesting the gnarled texture of the wood without excessive detail.

In this album leaf, the artist demonstrates a mastery of proportion and colour harmony. The ink wash provides depth to the plum tree, while the bird remains the primary focus. Such albums were often intended for private study or display within a scholar's studio, reflecting the personal interests of the literati class. The inclusion of the artist's seal and signature in the lower left corner confirms its provenance as a formal work from his collection. This print captures the subtle nuances of the original ink and colour application, preserving the character of the paper and the specific tonal qualities of the pigments used by the artist during the mid-eighteenth century.

You might also like

Catching Fireflies Beneath a Willow Tree (right) - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro
Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Desk-Album_-Flower-and-Bird-Paintings-Bird-with-Plum-Blossoms-_Poster_CompositorV1_1790794851376.jpg?v=1790799364
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/products/desk-album-flower-and-bird-paintings-bird-with-plum-blossoms-zhang-ruoai
