Gakutei, a pupil of Hokusai, was known for his technical precision and his ability to integrate poetry with visual imagery. The work depicts a courtesan in a moment of quiet reflection, holding a tea bowl near a charcoal brazier. The composition is framed by a fan-shaped cartouche containing calligraphic text, which provides a literary context for the scene.

The artist employs a refined colour palette, balancing the muted tones of the figure's kimono with the darker, solid form of the iron kettle. The background features a repeating clover-like pattern, which adds a decorative quality to the print without distracting from the central figure. The lines are thin and controlled, characteristic of the high-quality carving and printing processes required for surimono.

Surimono prints were produced in limited editions for a sophisticated audience. They often featured expensive materials, such as metallic pigments or embossing, which are visible in the subtle textures of this piece. The inclusion of the shamisen in the background suggests the cultural environment of the pleasure quarters, where music and tea ceremonies were common pastimes. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the fusion of visual art and literature was highly prized. The figure's posture is relaxed yet poised, capturing a fleeting moment of daily life with grace. The work remains a fine example of the technical mastery achieved by Gakutei during his career, reflecting the collaborative nature of print production in nineteenth-century Japan.

You might also like

Jo and Uba of Takasago Looking at the Rising Sun - Totoya Hokkei — Totoya Hokkei
Frolicking Figures and Animals - Kawanabe Kyōsai — Kawanabe Kyōsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Courtesan-Drinking-Tea_Poster_CompositorV1_1790796830262.jpg?v=1790804489
