This work, titled Confidences, originates from the series A New Sentimental Education. It captures a quiet, private moment between a woman and a child. The composition focuses on the physical closeness of the figures, with the child leaning into the woman, who is dressed in a striped garment. The soft, tonal quality of the aquatint creates a gentle atmosphere, blurring the edges of the figures and the background to suggest a domestic interior.

Maurin often explored themes of intimacy and the psychological states of his subjects. His approach to printmaking involved experimental techniques, which allowed him to achieve subtle gradations of tone that mimic the softness of charcoal or wash drawings. The background features a faint, repeating pattern on the wall, which provides a sense of place without distracting from the central interaction. The artist uses light and shadow to model the forms, creating a sense of volume and weight within the figures.

This print demonstrates Maurin's ability to convey emotion through posture and gesture. The title, Confidences, implies a shared secret or a moment of quiet communication, which is reflected in the hushed, monochromatic palette. The work is representative of the Symbolist interest in interiority and the exploration of private human experiences. By focusing on the tactile nature of the figures and the muted environment, Maurin invites the viewer to observe a fleeting, tender exchange. The print remains a fine example of late nineteenth-century French graphic art, showing the artist's skill in balancing technical precision with atmospheric effect.

You might also like

Portret van een onbekende vrouw by Félicien Rops
Quand tu seras fleur devenue by Charles Albert Waltner
Charles Maurin artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Confidences-from-A-New-Sentimental-Education_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120646008.jpg?v=1792201061
