The composition focuses on the animal from a rear perspective, a choice that allows the artist to explore the texture of the fur through varying densities of ink. The cat, wearing a simple collar, sits in a posture of quiet observation. Gyokushō employs the 'mokkotsu' or boneless method, where forms are defined by colour and ink washes rather than rigid outlines. This approach creates a soft, rounded appearance that captures the physical presence of the animal with economy and precision.

The negative space surrounding the figure is intentional, typical of the Japanese aesthetic tradition that values the relationship between the subject and the unadorned silk background. The subtle gradation of ink, from the darker tones of the ears and head to the lighter, translucent washes on the back and tail, provides a sense of volume. The artist's signature and seal appear in the upper right, balancing the composition. This work reflects the transition in Japanese art during the late nineteenth century, where traditional ink painting techniques were applied to subjects with a renewed sense of naturalistic observation. The restraint shown in the palette and the focus on a singular, domestic moment offer a glimpse into the artist's ability to elevate everyday observations into refined visual statements. The print preserves the texture of the original silk support, ensuring that the delicate tonal shifts of the ink are rendered with accuracy.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
The Great Wave off Kanagawa - Katsushika Hokusai — Katsushika Hokusai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Cat-Seen-from-Behind_Poster_CompositorV1_1791164500055.jpg?v=1791165253
