The portrait is based on an original painting by Joseph Siffred Duplessis, a painter known for his precise observation of character. Chevillet, a skilled engraver, translates the painterly qualities of the original into a monochromatic medium through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching techniques.

Franklin is shown within an oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture that mimics the appearance of a stone medallion. He wears a fur-trimmed coat, which reflects his public persona during his residency in Passy. The expression is one of calm intelligence, capturing the statesman at a time when he was a figure of immense popularity in French society. Below the portrait, a plinth bears an inscription detailing his birth in Boston and a short poetic tribute in French, which praises his wisdom and role as a guide for humanity.

The technical execution demonstrates the high standard of French printmaking in the late eighteenth century. Chevillet manages the transition between the soft texture of the fur collar and the firmer contours of the face with great control. The background within the oval is rendered with subtle shading, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of presence. This print serves as a record of the transatlantic exchange of ideas and the cult of personality that surrounded Franklin in Europe. It remains a fine example of how portrait prints were used to disseminate the likeness of public figures to a wide audience, combining technical craft with the political and social narratives of the era.

You might also like

Adrien de Lezay-Marnesia - Christophe Guérin — Christophe Guérin
Eugène de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy - Giuseppe Longhi — Giuseppe Longhi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Benjamin-Franklin_Poster_CompositorV1_1790864079585.jpg?v=1790864559
