adieu-von-le-corbusier
Adieu Von - Le Corbusier

A modernist composition by Le Corbusier, featuring a balanced arrangement of geometric forms and primary colours.

Le Corbusier, primarily recognised for his architectural contributions, maintained a rigorous practice in painting throughout his career. This work, Adieu Von, reflects his engagement with the principles of Purism, a movement he co-founded with Amédée Ozenfant. The composition is structured through a series of geometric planes and balanced colour fields, demonstrating his interest in the relationship between architectural space and the two-dimensional surface.

The painting employs a deliberate arrangement of shapes, where organic forms interact with rigid, linear boundaries. The palette is composed of muted earth tones contrasted against blocks of primary red, yellow, and green. This specific application of colour serves to define the spatial depth of the canvas, pushing certain elements forward while allowing others to recede into the background. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of form and the precision of the grid.

In this piece, the viewer observes the artist's transition from the strict, machine-inspired aesthetics of his earlier work towards a more fluid, expressive approach. The interplay between the soft, rounded shapes and the sharp, triangular motifs creates a visual tension that is characteristic of his mid-century output. The composition remains grounded in a rational framework, yet it allows for a degree of ambiguity in its subject matter. By reducing the visual elements to their essential components, Le Corbusier invites an analysis of form, balance, and the interaction of colour within a confined space. This print captures the texture and tonal range of the original oil painting, providing a clear representation of the artist's approach to modernist composition.

You might also like

Jonas and the Whale by Endre Bálint
Machine by Hedda Sterne

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Adieu-Von_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120535597.jpg?v=1792200593
