Yellow Tights demonstrates his mastery of line and colour, employing gouache to create a bold, flattened composition. The figure is defined by a series of concentric spirals, which form the eyes, ears, and torso, creating a hypnotic effect that draws the viewer into the centre of the image.

The use of line here is calligraphic and rhythmic. Calder applies black ink or paint to map out the facial features and the elongated neck, contrasting sharply against the solid blocks of colour in the background. The palette is primary and direct, featuring a deep violet, a warm red, and a bright yellow. These colours are applied in flat, unmodulated planes, which push the figure to the foreground and remove any sense of traditional perspective.

This work reflects the playful, inventive spirit that defined much of Calder's output. While he is often associated with the mechanical movement of his mobiles, his two-dimensional pieces show a similar interest in balance and form. The spirals are not merely decorative; they act as a structural device, organising the space of the page and providing a sense of energy. The figure, with its simplified anatomy and mask-like face, suggests an interest in non-Western art forms, a common theme among artists of the early to mid-twentieth century. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Calder focuses on the essential geometry of the human form, resulting in a composition that is both immediate and visually arresting. This print captures the texture of the original gouache, preserving the slight variations in paint application that give the work its character.

You might also like

Standing Nude by Raoul Dufy
Portrait of the Artist's Wife by Kazimir Malevich
Alexander Calder artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Yellow-Tights_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117148477.jpg?v=1792139529
