As a member of the imperial family and the head of the Shōren’in temple, Sonchō was a master of the Shōren’in-ryū style of calligraphy. This school of writing is known for its balanced structure and fluid, rhythmic execution. The work features a waka poem, a traditional form of Japanese verse consisting of thirty-one syllables, which here focuses on the imagery of chrysanthemums.

The calligraphy exhibits a controlled yet expressive hand. Each character flows into the next, demonstrating the artist's command over ink density and pressure. The spacing between the columns of text creates a sense of openness, allowing the viewer to appreciate the individual forms of the kana and kanji characters. The paper itself is mounted with a decorative border featuring a repeating floral motif, which complements the subject matter of the poem.

In Japanese aesthetic tradition, the act of writing is as significant as the content of the text. The brushstrokes here reveal a disciplined approach, characteristic of the aristocratic training Sonchō received. The ink remains clear and sharp against the aged paper, providing a direct connection to the artistic practices of the late sixteenth century. This print captures the subtle variations in ink tone, from deep black to softer, diluted grey, which are essential to the character of the original manuscript. It serves as an example of the intersection between literary culture and visual art in pre-modern Japan, where the written word functioned as a primary medium for personal and poetic expression.

You might also like

Poem on the Theme of Snow - Musō Soseki — Musō Soseki
Brushes and Paper Ornaments - Ryūryūkyo Shinsai — Ryūryūkyo Shinsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Waka-Poem-on-Chrysanthemums_Poster_CompositorV1_1790993751264.jpg?v=1791851348
