virgin-and-child-enthroned-with-saints-catherine-and-jerome-spanish-painter
Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints Catherine and Jerome - Spanish Painter

A fifteenth-century Hispano-Flemish panel painting depicting the Virgin and Child with Saints Catherine and Jerome in a formal, architectural setting.

This panel painting, attributed to an anonymous Spanish artist working in the mid-to-late fifteenth century, reflects the strong influence of Northern European techniques on Iberian art. The composition follows the tradition of the 'sacra conversazione', where the Virgin Mary sits upon a throne with the Christ Child, flanked by Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Jerome. The artist employs the oil medium to achieve a level of detail in the fabric textures and the architectural elements of the throne, which is characteristic of the Hispano-Flemish style.

Saint Catherine is positioned to the left, identifiable by her traditional attributes, while Saint Jerome stands to the right, accompanied by his lion. The inclusion of the lion serves as a visual marker for the saint, who is often depicted in the wilderness or a study. The architectural setting, featuring a rounded arch and decorative columns, provides a structured frame for the figures. The floor is rendered with a geometric tile pattern, adding a sense of spatial depth to the scene. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive facial features common to the period, with the Virgin's mantle draped in heavy, dark folds that contrast with the lighter tones of the child's skin.

The work demonstrates the synthesis of local Spanish traditions with the meticulous approach to light and surface texture imported from the Low Countries. The use of gold leaf in the haloes and the decorative backdrop behind the throne adds a layer of opulence, typical of the period's devotional art. This piece offers a window into the aesthetic priorities of fifteenth-century Spanish religious commissions, where the focus remained on the clarity of the narrative and the symbolic representation of the holy figures.

Spanish Painter
Fine Art Poster / A4 (21x29.7 cm) /
