the-resurrection-virgilius-solis
The Resurrection - Virgilius Solis

A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Virgilius Solis depicting the Resurrection of Christ, framed by classical ornamental motifs.

This engraving by the Nuremberg master Virgilius Solis depicts the Resurrection of Christ. Solis was a prolific printmaker, known for his small-scale works that circulated widely across Europe during the sixteenth century. His output often included biblical narratives, mythological scenes, and ornamental designs that influenced contemporary goldsmiths and artisans.

The central panel shows Christ rising from the tomb, holding a banner, while soldiers recoil in astonishment. The composition is framed by a decorative border typical of the period, incorporating classical motifs such as urns, foliage, and a reclining figure at the base. The use of line is precise, reflecting the technical discipline required for copperplate engraving. The contrast between the central narrative and the surrounding ornamentation creates a balanced visual hierarchy, where the sacred subject remains the primary focus despite the elaborate frame.

Solis often signed his work with his initials, which can be seen here in the lower right corner of the border. This print demonstrates his ability to combine narrative clarity with the decorative sensibilities of the German Renaissance. The work is representative of the period's interest in integrating classical architectural elements with Christian themes. The fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques provide volume to the figures and depth to the clouds, showcasing the artist's command over the medium. This piece offers a clear example of the graphic style prevalent in mid-sixteenth-century Germany, where printmaking served as a primary vehicle for the dissemination of artistic ideas and religious imagery.

You might also like

Lady with a Knight's Helmet - Master E.S. — Master E.S.
Saint James the Greater - Lucas van Leyden — Lucas van Leyden

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Resurrection_Poster_CompositorV1_1791877163583.jpg?v=1791877334
