Created in 2003, the work captures a dense, overgrown corner of his garden in London. Freud was a dedicated printmaker, often spending long hours on a single plate to achieve the desired density of line and shadow.

The composition avoids the traditional structure of a garden scene. Instead, it presents a tangled, almost claustrophobic view of foliage and branches. Freud uses a series of short, sharp marks to build up the texture of the leaves and the rough bark of the trees. The light is filtered through the canopy, creating a play of shadow that obscures as much as it reveals. There is no attempt to idealise the subject; the focus remains on the physical reality of the plants and the specific way they occupy the space.

This etching demonstrates Freud's ability to find subject matter in the mundane. By stripping away colour, he forces the viewer to engage with the structure and rhythm of the natural forms. The work is a study in patience and precision, reflecting the artist's disciplined approach to his craft. The absence of a clear horizon line or focal point creates a sense of immersion, drawing the eye into the thicket of lines. It is a quiet, observational piece that reveals the artist's preoccupation with the material world, whether that be human skin or the wild growth of a garden.

You might also like

Bench in the Park by Ivan Shishkin
Vrouw met een mand op haar rug by Jozef Israëls
Lucian Freud artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Painter-s-Garden_Poster_CompositorV1_1792003579921.jpg?v=1792107924
