The subject is an elderly man, seated comfortably beside a wooden barrel that functions as a makeshift table. He holds a clay pipe in one hand, his arm resting casually upon the barrel, while his other hand grips a pewter tankard. His expression is one of weary contentment, suggesting a pause in his daily routine.

The composition relies on a muted, earthy palette, characteristic of the period. Shadows dominate the background, drawing the viewer's eye to the illuminated figure of the man. Metsu demonstrates his technical skill through the rendering of textures: the soft fur of the man's cap, the metallic sheen of the pewter vessel, and the worn wood of the barrel are all depicted with precision. A white collar provides a sharp contrast against his brown coat, adding a sense of structure to the figure.

In the background, a small jug hangs on the wall near a dark slate, elements that ground the scene in a domestic or tavern setting. Metsu avoids idealisation, choosing instead to present a realistic observation of everyday life. The lighting is soft, emanating from an unseen source to the left, which models the man's features and highlights the folds of his clothing. This work reflects the Dutch interest in genre scenes, where the focus is on the mundane activities of ordinary people. The painting invites the viewer to observe the subject without narrative artifice, relying on the quiet dignity of the moment to carry the composition. It is a study in character and material reality, typical of Metsu's mid-career output during his time in Amsterdam.
