The work depicts Margaret Wilson, a young Covenanter who was tied to a stake in the Solway Firth to drown as the tide rose in 1685. Millais focuses on the psychological state of the subject rather than the graphic nature of the execution. The figure is shown with a resigned, melancholic expression, her long auburn hair cascading over her shoulders. She wears a simple, light-coloured blouse, and the iron chain binding her to the stake is visible across her waist.

The composition is tight, focusing on the upper torso and head of the woman. The background suggests the bleak, atmospheric conditions of the Scottish coast, with dark, turbulent water and a stormy sky. Millais employs a painterly technique, using loose brushwork to capture the texture of the hair and the fabric of the clothing. The lighting is soft, drawing attention to the pale skin of the subject against the darker, moody environment. This piece reflects the artist's later style, which moved away from the precise, hard-edged detail of his early Pre-Raphaelite period toward a more fluid, expressive approach.

This print captures the emotional weight of the original oil painting. The contrast between the vulnerability of the subject and the harshness of her surroundings creates a sense of quiet tension. It is a study in character and historical narrative, rendered with the technical skill that defined Millais's career in the late nineteenth century.

<div
