This work captures the Mediterranean light through a balanced, modernist lens.

Painted in 1918, The Bay of Nice captures the view from the artist's hotel room window in Nice. This work belongs to the period when Matisse began his long residency in the south of France, a move that shifted his focus toward the specific light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast. The composition is structured by the vertical framing of the balcony and the wall, which pushes the viewer into the scene from an elevated perspective.

The painting employs a simplified palette, dominated by the expansive blue of the sea and the warm yellow of the interior wall. Matisse uses thin, fluid brushwork to define the palm trees and the promenade below, where small, gestural figures suggest the casual movement of pedestrians. The contrast between the interior space and the exterior world is a recurring theme in his work from this decade. By framing the view with the architectural elements of the room, Matisse creates a sense of intimacy, inviting the viewer to share his vantage point.

Unlike his earlier, more aggressive experiments with colour, this piece demonstrates a measured approach to form and space. The sea is rendered with broad, sweeping strokes, while the promenade is depicted with lighter, more delicate marks. The work avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the essential geometry of the scene. It remains a clear example of his ability to synthesise complex visual information into a coherent, balanced image. The interplay of light and shadow, particularly on the yellow wall, provides a sense of warmth that characterises his Nice period. This print offers a direct connection to the artist's process, capturing the quiet observation of a daily view transformed through his distinct visual language.

You might also like

Port at Saint-Tropez by Moïse Kisling
Yacht by André Derain

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Bay-of-Nice_Poster_CompositorV1_1791984323228.jpg?v=1791984938
