The artist, known for his focus on natural history subjects and exotic fauna, employs a precise technique to render the animal. The tapir is shown in profile, with its characteristic snout angled upwards, while the water around its body is suggested through light, fluid brushwork.

The background features a rural setting with a small cottage and trees, which provides a contrast to the exotic nature of the subject. Van Royen uses a muted palette, typical of the period, to balance the animal with its surroundings. The composition is structured to draw the eye towards the tapir, which occupies the lower foreground. The treatment of the animal's fur and the surrounding water demonstrates the artist's attention to detail, a common trait in Dutch natural history studies of the early eighteenth century.

Van Royen was active during a period when European interest in non-native species was growing, often driven by colonial exploration and the expansion of private menageries. Such illustrations were frequently produced for collectors who sought to document the diversity of the natural world. This piece reflects the intersection of scientific observation and artistic interpretation, where the animal is placed within a recognisable, if somewhat stylised, European environment. The work remains a clear example of the period's approach to animal portraiture, where the subject is rendered with a degree of anatomical accuracy while maintaining the aesthetic conventions of the time.

You might also like

Two Exotic Birds by Aert Schouman
Standing Bird by Jean-Baptiste Oudry

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Tapir-in-the-Water_Poster_CompositorV1_1789629314906.jpg?v=1789629627
