By 1921, Braque had moved away from the fragmented, monochromatic approach of his earlier analytical experiments. This composition demonstrates his interest in synthetic Cubism, where objects are reconstructed through flattened planes and decorative textures rather than strictly observed perspective.

The painting features a guitar, a recurring subject in Braque's oeuvre, alongside musical notation and a vessel. These elements are not rendered with traditional modelling. Instead, the artist employs overlapping geometric shapes and distinct patterns to suggest the presence of these items. The inclusion of stippled, green-and-orange patterned areas introduces a tactile quality, contrasting with the solid, dark blocks of colour that anchor the composition. Braque uses these varied surfaces to manipulate the viewer's perception of space, creating a shallow, stage-like arrangement where the objects appear to float upon the picture plane.

Braque's approach here reflects his focus on the physical reality of the painting as an object. The guitar is reduced to its essential components: the neck, the sound hole, and the strings. By simplifying these forms, he invites the viewer to engage with the rhythm and balance of the composition itself. The palette remains controlled, relying on earthy browns, blacks, and muted tones, which allows the decorative patterns to provide visual interest without disrupting the structural integrity of the piece. This work represents the artist's ability to balance rigorous formal construction with a refined sense of decorative harmony, a hallmark of his post-war output.

You might also like

Still Life with Guitar by Juan Gris
Glass of Absinthe and Cigarette by Pablo Picasso
More by Georges Braque →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Still-Life-with-Guitar_Poster_CompositorV1_1791919609562.jpg?v=1791919671
