His work often draws upon the visual language of children, graffiti, and those outside the conventional art world. In this piece, the artist employs a chaotic, layered application of paint that creates a sense of physical depth and tactile surface. The figures are rendered with simplified, almost primitive lines, appearing as if they are emerging from or being consumed by the surrounding environment.

The composition is marked by a lack of traditional perspective. Instead, the space is flattened, forcing the viewer to engage with the surface as a field of activity rather than a window into a scene. The colour palette is dominated by aggressive reds, blacks, and whites, which contribute to the raw energy of the work. Dubuffet’s approach here reflects his interest in the materiality of paint, often mixing substances into his medium to create a textured, crusty finish that defies the smoothness of classical oil painting.

By focusing on the four characters, Dubuffet invites a reading of the work that is both playful and unsettling. The figures lack individualised features, yet they possess a distinct presence within the dense, agitated background. This work is representative of his mature period, where his interest in the 'Hourloupe' style began to influence his broader output. The interplay between the crude, linear figures and the complex, layered ground creates a tension that is characteristic of his career. This print captures the visceral quality of the original, preserving the rough-hewn character of the brushwork and the intensity of the colour application, making it a compelling addition to any collection interested in the mid-twentieth-century shift toward non-traditional modes of representation.

You might also like

Alfabetische tartaar by Lucebert
People, Birds and Sun by Karel Appel

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Site-with-four-characters_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117499487.jpg?v=1792140474
