Lorentz - Hendrik van Borssum Buisman

A detailed charcoal portrait of the physicist Hendrik Lorentz by Dutch artist Hendrik van Borssum Buisman.

This charcoal drawing by Hendrik van Borssum Buisman depicts the Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz. The artist employs a sensitive, academic approach to portraiture, focusing on the subject's facial features and intellectual presence. The drawing captures Lorentz with a direct gaze, his expression conveying a sense of quiet contemplation.

Buisman uses charcoal to build form through subtle gradations of tone. The lines are precise, particularly around the eyes and the bridge of the nose, where the artist defines the structure of the spectacles. The beard and moustache are rendered with soft, layered strokes that suggest texture without becoming overly detailed. The background remains largely untouched, allowing the figure to emerge from the paper surface. The composition is framed by a simple border, a common feature in Buisman's portrait studies, which gives the work a formal, archival quality.

Hendrik Lorentz, a Nobel Prize winner, is presented here with the gravity expected of a man of his scientific stature. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the psychological depth of the sitter. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume, particularly in the modelling of the forehead and the cheekbones. This portrait is a fine example of early twentieth-century Dutch draughtsmanship, where the focus remains on the clarity of the subject and the technical proficiency of the medium. The work provides a clear, unadorned view of a significant figure in the history of physics, rendered with the restraint and observation characteristic of Buisman's portraiture.

You might also like

Portrait of Francesco Redi by Benedetto Bordiga
Asa Gray by George Peter Alexander Healy
