portret-van-johannes-bugenhagen-ernst-ludwig-riepenhausen
Portret van Johannes Bugenhagen - Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen

A precise engraving by Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen depicting the German theologian Johannes Bugenhagen in a classic bust-length portrait.

This engraving by Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen depicts the German theologian Johannes Bugenhagen, a central figure in the Protestant Reformation. Riepenhausen, a German engraver and draughtsman, was active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His work often focused on historical figures and classical subjects, reflecting the academic rigour of the period.

The portrait presents Bugenhagen in a bust-length format, wearing a traditional cap and a heavy, textured coat. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the contours of the face and the fabric of the clothing. The lighting is subtle, creating a soft transition between the subject and the background, which adds a sense of volume to the figure. The inclusion of the name 'BUGENHAGEN' at the base of the print follows the conventions of historical portraiture, identifying the subject for the viewer.

Technically, the print demonstrates the controlled line work characteristic of the era. The artist manages the density of the lines to suggest different textures, from the smooth skin of the face to the coarser material of the cap. This piece is an example of the documentary function of printmaking in the nineteenth century, where such portraits were produced to circulate the likenesses of historical figures to a wider audience. The composition is balanced and restrained, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to focus entirely on the character of the sitter. The print remains a clear record of the aesthetic standards of German engraving during the lifetime of the artist.

You might also like

Portrait of Johannes Bugenhagen by Lucas Cranach the Elder
Portrait of Bernhard Ludwig Löher at Age 37 by Lucas Kilian

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portret-van-Johannes-Bugenhagen_Poster_CompositorV1_1791804920532.jpg?v=1791805241
