The composition is presented within an oval format, a common choice for nineteenth-century portraiture that focuses the viewer's attention on the subject. The child is shown from the chest up, with shoulders draped in a pale, textured fabric that contrasts with the deep, saturated red background.

Cermak, a Czech painter who spent much of his career in Paris, demonstrates a refined approach to light and skin tone in this work. The soft modelling of the child's face, combined with the direct gaze, captures a sense of quiet observation. The brushwork on the garment is visible and tactile, providing a counterpoint to the smoother application of paint on the skin. The choice of a bold, monochromatic red backdrop serves to isolate the figure, ensuring the focus remains entirely on the sitter's features.

This piece reflects the conventions of mid-nineteenth-century portraiture, where the artist aimed to balance technical precision with a sympathetic rendering of the subject. The oval frame reinforces the intimate nature of the commission, typical of family portraits intended for private display. Cermak's ability to convey the delicate qualities of childhood through subtle colour transitions and careful composition is evident here. The work remains a clear example of the artist's technical proficiency during his period of activity in Western Europe, where he was well-regarded for his ability to capture character and form with clarity and restraint. The painting is preserved as a record of the van der Kolk family, documenting the appearance of the young Henri Bernard with a focus on naturalistic detail and balanced tonal values.

You might also like

Head of a Girl by Hans Meyer
Portret van Cornelis Cels by Willem Hendrik Schmidt

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Henri-Bernard-van-der-Kolk-at-Age-Two_Poster_CompositorV1_1789629346608.jpg?v=1789629944
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/nl/products/portrait-of-henri-bernard-van-der-kolk-at-age-two-jaroslav-cermak
