Van Looij, a central figure in the Tachtigers movement, travelled to Morocco during the late nineteenth century, where he produced a series of sketches and pastels documenting the local atmosphere. The composition focuses on pack animals resting under a covered structure, their forms rendered with soft, atmospheric strokes of pastel that prioritise mood over rigid detail.

The artist employs a muted palette, dominated by earthy ochres, deep browns, and cool shadows. The light in the scene is handled with a characteristic impressionistic touch, suggesting the intense heat and harsh glare of the North African sun through the contrast between the dark, sheltered area and the sun-bleached ground in the foreground. The animals are depicted with a sense of weary stillness, their posture conveying the quiet rhythm of daily life in the market square.

Van Looij was known for his sensitivity to light and texture, qualities that are evident in the way he layers the pastel to create depth and surface interest. Rather than providing a precise architectural rendering, he captures the essence of the location through suggestive marks and tonal shifts. The work reflects the broader European interest in Orientalist subjects during this period, yet it remains distinct for its focus on the mundane realities of the market rather than exoticised spectacle. The paper support remains visible in several areas, contributing to the sketch-like quality of the piece and allowing the viewer to observe the artist's process. This print preserves the delicate texture of the original pastel, offering a window into the artist's observations during his travels.

<div
