Tattarescu, a founder of the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, was trained in the Neoclassical tradition in Rome. His technical approach here reflects that rigorous academic education, prioritising clear modelling of the subject's features and a controlled use of light.

The composition focuses on the sitter, who is presented in a traditional bust-length format. The subject wears a dark, high-collared coat, which provides a stark contrast to the lighter tones of his face and the white collar visible at the neck. Tattarescu employs a muted, atmospheric background, which directs the viewer's attention toward the subject's expression. The brushwork is precise, allowing for a realistic rendering of the sitter's beard and facial structure. The lighting is soft, creating subtle shadows that define the contours of the face without resorting to dramatic chiaroscuro.

As a representative work of the period, this portrait documents the appearance of a member of the Romanian elite during a time of significant national development. Tattarescu's ability to balance technical accuracy with a sense of the sitter's presence is evident in the direct gaze and the careful attention to detail in the clothing. The painting remains a clear example of the artist's contribution to the development of portrait painting in Romania, demonstrating his adherence to the standards of European academic art while documenting the figures of his own society.

<p
