gezicht-op-de-remonstrantse-kerk-aan-de-keizersgracht-te-amsterdam-in-aanbouw-joost-van-den-vondel
Gezicht op de Remonstrantse Kerk aan de Keizersgracht te Amsterdam in aanbouw - Joost van den Vondel

A detailed seventeenth-century architectural print showing the construction of the Remonstrant Church in Amsterdam, complete with contemporary labourers and descriptive text.

This print depicts the construction of the Remonstrant Church on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam, as it appeared in 1630. The composition provides a cross-section view, revealing the internal structure of the building alongside the active work occurring on the exterior scaffolding. The artist captures the technical aspects of seventeenth-century Dutch construction, showing labourers engaged in various tasks, from stone-cutting to masonry, while the skeletal frame of the church remains exposed.

The print is framed by a decorative border featuring putti holding a banner inscribed with the Latin title, Templum Christianum Amsterdami. Below the main image, a series of verses in Dutch, Latin, and French provide commentary on the nature of the building and the religious context of the time. The inclusion of these texts suggests the print served as both a record of urban development and a vehicle for theological reflection during a period of significant religious debate in the Netherlands.

The visual style is characteristic of Dutch architectural prints from the early seventeenth century, prioritising clarity and descriptive detail over atmospheric effects. The use of line work defines the structural elements of the church, while the figures are rendered with enough detail to convey their specific roles in the construction process. This work offers a view into the urban transformation of Amsterdam, documenting the physical manifestation of religious institutions within the city fabric. It remains a valuable historical record of the architectural practices and the social climate of the Dutch Golden Age.

You might also like

Gezicht op de Beurs van Zocher te Amsterdam by Dirk Jurriaan Sluyter
Het Stathuys t'Amsterdam - Claes Jansz.
