This work displays the characteristic energy of his early period, where the artist prioritised the physical presence of objects over delicate representation. The composition is crowded, featuring a pheasant, a large fish, and several jars of preserved produce arranged on a table.

Mashkov employs a heavy, deliberate brushstroke that gives the objects a sense of weight and volume. The colour palette is earthy and warm, dominated by ochre, deep reds, and browns, which ground the scene in a domestic, almost rustic reality. Unlike the refined still lifes of the Dutch Golden Age, this painting leans into a raw, material quality. The objects are not merely observed; they are constructed through thick layers of paint that define their surfaces and textures.

The arrangement of the jars and the game reflects a fascination with the abundance of everyday life. Mashkov often chose subjects that allowed him to explore the interplay of light on varied surfaces, from the glass of the jars to the scales of the fish and the plumage of the bird. By focusing on these mundane items, he elevates the domestic sphere into a subject of serious artistic inquiry. The lack of conventional perspective creates a sense of immediacy, pulling the viewer into the dense, tactile space of the table. This painting remains a clear example of the artist's interest in the materiality of oil paint and his rejection of the ethereal in favour of the tangible.

You might also like

Still Life with Pitcher and Fruit by Maurice de Vlaminck
Still Life: Pot, Onions, Bread and Green Apples by Meijer de Haan
More by Ilya Mashkov →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Game-fish-pickles-Still-Life-with-pheasant-_Poster_CompositorV1_1781917085365.jpg?v=1781917224
