It features bold colours and simplified forms.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted this work around 1909 during his time with the Die Brücke group in Dresden. The artists often visited the Moritzburg Lakes to observe and paint the human figure in natural surroundings. This practice was part of their search for an unmediated, authentic way of life away from urban constraints. They believed that by painting outdoors, they could capture a sense of spontaneity that was missing from studio-based academic art.

The painting depicts four female figures positioned in a body of water. Kirchner employs a palette of non-naturalistic colours to create a sense of emotional intensity. The water is rendered in a flat, saturated blue that dominates the lower half of the canvas. The figures appear in warm shades of orange and yellow, creating a sharp contrast against the cool tones of the lake. A red sky sits above a yellow hill in the background, where a single dark tree is visible. Green reeds and grass are suggested with quick, vertical strokes in the foreground and middle ground.

Kirchner uses heavy, dark outlines to define the figures. These lines are angular and simplified, moving away from traditional anatomical accuracy. The brushstrokes are visible and energetic, indicating the speed at which the artist worked to capture the scene. This technique reflects the group's desire to convey immediate sensation. The composition lacks deep perspective, resulting in a flattened space where the figures and the environment occupy the same visual plane. This approach to space and colour was influenced by the group's interest in woodcut printing and non-Western art forms. The work remains a significant example of early twentieth-century German modernism.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Portrait of Charles I of England - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Four-Bathers_Poster_CompositorV1_1780464844571.jpg?v=1791853180
