The composition features a series of aggressive, dark, linear marks set against a warm, earthy ground. These lines do not represent objects or figures, but rather the physical act of mark-making itself. Hartung often used unconventional tools to scratch into his plates, creating a sense of urgency and directness that defines his approach to printmaking.

The contrast between the dense, black vertical strokes and the lighter, ochre-toned background creates a tension within the frame. Some lines appear to overlap, suggesting a sense of depth, while others remain flat against the surface. This work belongs to the Tachisme movement, which prioritised spontaneous brushwork and the raw expression of the artist's internal state. By stripping away representational elements, Hartung invites the viewer to engage with the rhythm and energy of the lines.

This print demonstrates the artist's control over the etching process. The varying thickness of the lines, combined with the textured background, reveals a sophisticated understanding of how ink interacts with paper. Hartung's work from the 1950s remains a primary example of how non-figurative art can convey motion and weight. The composition is balanced, yet it retains a sense of controlled chaos. It is a study in the relationship between light and dark, as well as the interplay between structured form and free-flowing gesture. This piece is suitable for those interested in mid-century modernism and the history of abstract printmaking.

You might also like

Annunciation by Martin Kline
Phi by Morris Louis

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Etching-No_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114994255.jpg?v=1792136017
