Paets

A seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting the Christ Child and angels performing domestic chores in a traditional kitchen setting.

This etching by the Dutch artist Pieter Jacobsz. Paets depicts a domestic scene involving the Christ Child and angels within a seventeenth-century kitchen. The composition focuses on the humble activities of the figures, as the Christ Child is shown sweeping the floor while other celestial beings assist with household chores, such as cooking at the hearth and preparing wood. The setting is rendered with attention to the typical furnishings of a Dutch interior, including a plate rack, a large fireplace, and leaded glass windows.

The work belongs to a tradition of devotional prints that sought to bring biblical figures into the familiar environment of the home. By placing the Christ Child in a mundane role, the artist encourages the viewer to find spiritual meaning in daily labour and domestic service. The text below the image, written in early modern Dutch, reinforces this moral lesson, urging the reader to emulate such willing service in their own life.

Technically, the print displays the characteristic line work of Dutch etching from the period. The artist uses cross-hatching to define the shadows within the room and to create texture on the wooden beams and clothing. The perspective is slightly compressed, typical of small-scale devotional illustrations intended for personal contemplation or inclusion in religious books. The figures are depicted with a degree of naturalism, though their proportions and expressions remain stylised to suit the narrative requirements of the scene. This print offers a view into the intersection of religious iconography and the domestic values prevalent in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century.

You might also like

Untitled (Two Soldiers on Horseback, Etching) - Fine Art Print — Unknown Artist
Dilapidated Farm - Jan van de Velde II — Jan van de Velde II

Pieter Jacobsz.
