François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, captures the moment of high drama as Andromeda awaits rescue from the sea monster. The composition is organised around the central figure of the princess, who is chained to a rock formation. Her posture is fluid, characteristic of Boucher's approach to the human form, with soft curves and a sense of gentle movement despite the perilous situation.

In the upper left, Perseus descends from the clouds, his form suggested through light, energetic lines. Below, the sea monster emerges from the water, its features rendered with expressive, swirling marks that contrast with the smoother treatment of the figure. The etching technique allows for a variety of textures, from the delicate hatching on the skin to the more robust, rapid strokes defining the turbulent water and the rocky terrain. Boucher uses the medium to create a sense of atmosphere, where the boundary between the physical world and the mythological realm appears porous.

Boucher was highly regarded for his ability to translate complex narratives into decorative, accessible imagery. This work demonstrates his skill in balancing the tension of the narrative with the aesthetic requirements of the period. The lines are precise yet spontaneous, reflecting the artist's background as a prolific draughtsman. The scene avoids excessive darkness, favouring a clarity of form that allows the viewer to appreciate the interplay of light and shadow across the composition. This print offers a glimpse into the graphic output of an artist whose work defined the visual culture of the French court during the reign of Louis XV. It remains a clear example of the Rococo interest in classical themes, interpreted through a lens of grace and artifice.

<div
