The work belongs to a series that references the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, a classic subject in Japanese art. Harunobu, a pioneer of the nishiki-e or brocade print, employs a delicate colour palette and fine line work to capture the intimacy of the moment. The figures are rendered with the slender, graceful proportions characteristic of his style during the 1760s.

The composition is balanced by the presence of a tall standing lantern and a large green curtain, which frame the players. The man rests his chin on his hand, contemplating his next move, while the woman watches him with a gentle expression. The floor is covered in tatami mats, and the background features a subtle, repeating floral pattern on the wall. Above the figures, a cloud-shaped cartouche contains a poem, linking the visual narrative to the literary tradition of the poetic immortals.

Harunobu was instrumental in the development of multi-coloured printing techniques. This print demonstrates his ability to integrate human figures into a structured interior space without sacrificing the fluidity of the design. The use of soft, muted tones creates a sense of calm, typical of the ukiyo-e genre's focus on the floating world of everyday life. The print is a fine example of the technical precision achieved by Edo-period artisans, where the registration of multiple woodblocks allowed for the subtle layering of colour and pattern seen in the kimonos and the surrounding decor. The work remains a clear representation of the aesthetic values prevalent in mid-eighteenth-century Japan, where literature and visual art were frequently intertwined.

You might also like

Mountains and Rivers Along the Kisokaidō - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Women Near a River - Utagawa Kuniyoshi — Utagawa Kuniyoshi
