In this work, dated 1821, he depicts a spaniel in a moment of sudden action. The dog, positioned on the right, lunges towards a group of ducks near the water's edge. The birds are caught in a state of alarm, with wings spread and bodies angled to take flight from the pond.

Ward employs a dramatic approach to the scene. The spaniel is rendered with careful attention to the texture of its coat, showing the artist's skill in animal anatomy. The background features tall, sharp reeds that frame the action and provide a sense of the natural environment. The lighting is focused on the interaction between the predator and its prey, creating a sense of immediate tension. The water reflects the movement of the ducks, adding to the overall energy of the composition.

This painting reflects the broader interest in animal subjects that occupied many British artists during this period. Ward was influenced by the works of George Morland and Peter Paul Rubens, which is evident in his handling of animal forms and the dynamic nature of his scenes. The work avoids static portraiture, opting instead for a narrative moment that captures the instinctual behaviour of the spaniel. The palette consists of earthy tones, greens, and browns, which ground the scene in a realistic setting. This print offers a clear view of Ward's technical ability and his keen observation of animal life in the British countryside.

You might also like

Decoyman's Dog and Duck - Edwin Henry Landseer by Edwin Landseer
Laying Down the Law by Edwin Henry Landseer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/A-Spaniel-Frightening-Ducks_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114212046.jpg?v=1792134354
