Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to professional printmaking, is recognised for his refined depictions of courtesans and the social dynamics of the Yoshiwara district.

The composition features two women in an interior setting. One figure stands, holding a letter or scroll, while the other kneels, looking upward in a gesture of engagement. The artist employs a muted colour palette, characteristic of the period, which relies on soft ochres, faded reds, and earthy tones. Through the shoji screen in the background, one observes the silhouette of wild geese, a visual shorthand for the autumn season and a direct reference to the classical Eight Views theme.

Koryūsai demonstrates a mastery of line, using fluid, controlled strokes to define the drapery of the kimonos and the delicate features of the subjects. The spatial arrangement is intentionally flattened, prioritising the decorative quality of the figures and their garments over three-dimensional realism. This approach is typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus remains on the aesthetic harmony of the scene rather than atmospheric perspective. The print captures a quiet, private moment between the two women, contrasting with the more public, performative nature of many other works from the era. It provides a glimpse into the daily life and interactions within the Yoshiwara, framed through the lens of classical poetic allusion.

You might also like

A Votive Picture to Be Donated to the Kannon of Asakusa by Kitagawa Kikumaro
Evening Bell at Mii Temple by Katsushika Hokusai
More by Isoda Koryūsai →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Flying-Down-of-Wild-Geese-at-Yoshiwara_Poster_CompositorV1_1791770435912.jpg?v=1791770857
