Executed in red chalk, the drawing demonstrates the artist's technical command over the medium, using varied pressure to define the sitter's features and the texture of his attire. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a composed expression. His long, flowing hair is characteristic of the fashion of the late seventeenth century, framing a face rendered with subtle shading and precise contours.

De Baen, a specialist in portraiture during the Dutch Golden Age, often worked for the elite of the Dutch Republic. This specific study reflects the sober yet refined aesthetic prevalent in the period. The use of red chalk allows for a soft, tonal quality that brings a sense of immediacy to the portrait, distinguishing it from the more rigid formality of oil paintings from the same era. The lace collar and the fabric of his coat are suggested through economical, rhythmic strokes, showing the artist's ability to convey material detail without overworking the surface.

Cornelis de Witt was a significant figure in the political life of the Netherlands, and this portrait offers a glimpse into the personal appearance of a man caught in the turbulent political climate of the 1672 'Rampjaar'. The drawing remains a fine example of seventeenth-century draughtsmanship, prioritising clarity of form and psychological presence. The neutral, warm tone of the paper provides a harmonious background for the sanguine chalk, creating a balanced visual experience that retains its clarity centuries after its creation. This print reproduces the delicate nuances of the original chalk lines, preserving the tactile quality of the artist's hand.

You might also like

Portret van Cornelis de Witt by Elias Nessenthaler
Portret van Harmen Lijnslager by Jan van Haensbergen
More by Jan de Baen →
