The composition focuses on two figures, a man and a woman, bent over the earth in a rhythmic, repetitive motion. Their forms are simplified, merging with the soil they work, which reflects the artist's interest in the dignity of peasant life. This subject matter echoes his earlier Dutch period, yet the application of paint shows the stylistic shifts he underwent after moving to France.

The palette is dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and muted greens, which ground the figures within the field. The sky is rendered with pale, horizontal strokes, suggesting the early light of dawn or the fading glow of dusk. Van Gogh uses heavy, visible brushwork to define the contours of the figures and the texture of the ploughed ground. The lack of fine detail in the faces or clothing shifts the viewer's attention to the physical act of planting, rather than individual portraiture.

Van Gogh often looked to the works of Jean-François Millet for inspiration regarding the depiction of agricultural workers. In this piece, he avoids romanticising the scene, choosing instead to present the raw, physical connection between the labourers and the land. The figures are positioned in the foreground, creating a sense of proximity that allows the viewer to observe the weight and effort of their task. The horizon line is kept low, giving the figures a monumental presence against the vast, open field. This painting remains a clear example of his focus on the human condition and his ability to find visual power in the mundane activities of daily life.

You might also like

The Sower by Jean-Francois Millet
Woman with a Rake by Jean-François Millet
More by Vincent van Gogh →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Peasant-and-Peasant-Woman-Planting-Potatoes_Poster_CompositorV1_1792109215701.jpg?v=1792299209
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/it/products/peasant-and-peasant-woman-planting-potatoes-vincent-van-gogh
