The drawing demonstrates his characteristic approach to form, where soft, delicate lines define the facial features and the cascading, voluminous hair. Burne-Jones often utilised these types of studies to prepare for larger oil paintings, focusing on the rhythmic quality of the hair and the melancholic expression of the sitter.

The composition is restrained, placing the figure against a plain background to direct attention to the contours of the face and the movement of the tresses. The artist employs a light touch with the pencil, allowing for subtle gradations of tone that suggest volume without the need for heavy shading. This technique reflects his interest in the aesthetic qualities of line and the influence of early Renaissance masters, whose work he studied extensively.

Burne-Jones was a central figure in the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His work often moved away from the strict realism of the earlier members, favouring a more poetic and dreamlike quality. This drawing is an example of his technical proficiency and his ability to convey a specific mood through minimal means. The sitter's downward gaze and the gentle curve of the neck contribute to the quiet, contemplative atmosphere typical of his portraiture. The work remains a clear example of the artist's focus on idealised beauty and his mastery of drawing as a primary medium for artistic expression.

You might also like

Portrait of Frederik Schmidt-Degener by Harm Kamerlingh Onnes
Cyril Benoni Holman Hunt by William Holman Hunt
Edward Burne-Jones artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Head-of-a-Young-Woman-Profile_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125630316.jpg?v=1792297055
