The painting depicts a young woman in classical attire, leaning against a marble balustrade while engaged in the traditional act of petal plucking to divine the affections of a lover. Godward is recognised for his technical precision in rendering textures, particularly the diaphanous quality of the fabric and the cool, smooth surface of the marble.

The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned centrally against a backdrop of foliage. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the terracotta tones of the woman's garment to contrast with the pale, grey-blue drapery and the white marble. The attention to detail in the embroidered hem of the skirt demonstrates the artist's interest in historical accuracy and decorative elements common to the period.

Godward spent much of his career in Italy, where he absorbed the aesthetic of the Mediterranean. This influence is visible in the choice of setting and the classical styling of the subject. His work often features solitary figures in contemplative states, removed from the industrial concerns of contemporary London. The painting reflects the late nineteenth-century fascination with antiquity, a theme that occupied many artists of the Royal Academy circle. By focusing on the quiet, domestic ritual of the flower divination, Godward captures a moment of personal introspection. The work remains a clear example of his technical approach to oil painting, where light and shadow are used to define form without relying on heavy impasto. The result is a polished, serene image that prioritises clarity and grace.

You might also like

An Open Book by Albert Joseph Moore
Virginia Dalrymple by George Frederic Watts

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/He-Loves-Me-He-Loves-Me-Not_Poster_CompositorV1_1792129497685.jpg?v=1792293611
