Jozef Ernest Buschmann, a Belgian artist known for his technical precision in printmaking, depicts the city skyline as viewed from the Schelde river. The composition focuses on the architectural silhouette of the port, featuring the distinct spires and fortifications that defined the city's waterfront at the time.

The work displays the characteristic line quality of the period, using varied hatching to suggest the texture of stone, the movement of water, and the atmospheric quality of the sky. Small vessels and figures are scattered across the foreground, providing a sense of scale and activity to the busy commercial hub. The artist balances the static nature of the buildings with the fluid, rhythmic lines of the river, creating a cohesive view of the urban environment.

Buschmann's approach to this topographical subject reflects the interest in documenting historical cityscapes before the rapid industrialisation of the later nineteenth century altered their appearance. The etching serves as a visual record of the port's layout, including the prominent cranes and defensive structures that were once common along the riverbank. The print is executed with a focus on clarity and detail, typical of the mid-century European printmaking tradition. By choosing a low vantage point from the water, the artist emphasises the relationship between the city and the river that sustained its economy. This piece offers a glimpse into the maritime history of Antwerp, rendered with the disciplined hand of a skilled etcher.

You might also like

Miss Ann Elliott, Beaufort, South Carolina - Thomas Sully — Thomas Sully
Que viene el Coco - Francisco de Goya — Francisco de Goya

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Gezicht-op-de-werf-in-Antwerpen-vanaf-de-Schelde_Poster_CompositorV1_1791873478763.jpg?v=1791873585
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/it/products/gezicht-op-de-werf-in-antwerpen-vanaf-de-schelde-jozef-ernest-buschmann
