He served in both World Wars, experiences that influenced his artistic output. Underwood taught at several art schools, including his own Brook Green School, and mentored artists such as Henry Moore and Eileen Agar. His work often explored themes of human form, war, and the relationship between humans and nature. 'Erecting a Camouflage Tree' depicts a group of soldiers engaged in constructing a camouflaged tree. The scene is filled with figures in various states of undress, working together to assemble the artificial tree. The palette is dominated by muted greens, browns, and creams, reflecting the colours of the natural environment. The composition is dynamic, with figures arranged in a circular pattern around the central tree. The painting captures a moment of collective effort and ingenuity amidst the backdrop of war.

You might also like

The Watch by Cyprián Majerník
Two Soldiers and Two Women by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
More by Leon Underwood →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Erecting-a-Camouflage-Tree_Poster_CompositorV1_1778805246304.jpg?v=1778809119
