This work captures a woman in a sophisticated gown, leaning over a billiard table. The composition focuses on the contrast between the muted, textured fabric of her dress and the bold, flat red wall behind her. Stevens was known for his technical precision in rendering textiles, and here the lace trim and heavy drapery of the gown demonstrate his attention to material detail.

The scene is domestic yet performative. The woman is captured in a moment of concentration, her posture suggesting a casual familiarity with the game. The billiard table provides a horizontal anchor to the verticality of the figure, while the dark wood of the table contrasts with the bright, almost monochromatic red background. The floor, covered in a patterned rug, adds a layer of visual texture that balances the composition.

Stevens often explored themes of leisure and social status. By placing his subject in a private interior, he invites the viewer to observe a quiet, unposed moment. The lighting is soft, directed to highlight the profile of the subject and the curve of her silhouette. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the Second Empire period, where interior design and personal attire were closely linked to social identity. The work remains a study of light, texture, and the quiet observation of contemporary life.

You might also like

Lady On A Pink Divan by Julius LeBlanc Stewart
Young Woman Standing by Horace Vernet
Alfred Stevens prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Elegant-at-Billiards_Poster_CompositorV1_1787883864183.jpg?v=1787884456
