During this period, Matisse moved to Nice, where he began a series of works featuring models in various costumes and settings. Lorette was a frequent subject for the artist, appearing in numerous paintings and drawings produced between 1916 and 1917.

The composition is direct and focuses on the sitter, who wears a white turban that frames her face. Matisse employs a simplified approach to form, using broad areas of colour and clear, decisive outlines. The background consists of a muted, dark green tone, which contrasts with the lighter hues of the subject's clothing and skin. The chair back provides a geometric element, grounding the figure within the space.

Matisse avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the essence of the sitter through economy of line and colour. The light source appears to come from the front, illuminating the face and neck while casting subtle shadows that define the facial structure. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the decorative potential of the human figure, a theme that occupied much of his output during his time in the south of France. The painting is part of a larger body of work where Matisse explored the relationship between the model, the studio environment, and the application of paint. By stripping away unnecessary elements, he directs the viewer to the interplay of shape and tone. This portrait remains a clear example of his approach to figurative painting, where the subject serves as a vehicle for formal experimentation rather than a traditional likeness.

You might also like

Portrait of Ahko by Arshile Gorky
Portrait of a Woman by André Derain
Henri Matisse artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Woman-in-Turban-Lorette-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791950271747.jpg?v=1791950632
