Tanner, who spent much of his career in France, moved away from the strict realism of his early training to embrace a more subjective approach to his subjects. This piece reflects the Tonalist aesthetic, which prioritises mood and the interplay of light over precise detail.

The composition is dominated by two primary vertical forms: a tall, mature tree on the right and a thinner, skeletal tree to its left. These elements create a sense of rhythm against the expansive, luminous sky. The ground is rendered in darker, earthy tones, suggesting a path or clearing that recedes into the shadows of the foliage. Tanner uses a soft, blended brushwork that obscures sharp edges, allowing the colours to bleed into one another. This technique creates a hazy, dreamlike quality that is characteristic of his later work.

Unlike his more famous biblical scenes, this study focuses on the quiet observation of nature. The palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the deep, shadowed greens and browns of the foreground and the bright, ethereal blue of the sky. The light appears to emanate from behind the trees, casting a soft glow that unifies the scene. By minimising narrative elements, Tanner invites the viewer to engage with the sensory experience of the environment. The work captures a fleeting moment of stillness, typical of the artist's interest in the spiritual and emotional resonance of the natural world. It is a fine example of how Tanner utilised light to transform a simple outdoor scene into a contemplative image.

You might also like

Hillside with Trees - William Morris Hunt — William Morris Hunt
A Morning - Elbridge Kingsley — Elbridge Kingsley

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Trees-and-Path-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791901719139.jpg?v=1791901844
